MILLSBORO, Del. - Poultry company Allen Harim can continue to pursue a deboning operation at its new Millsboro headquarters.
The Sussex County Board of Adjustment voted to amend the company's challenged condition. The original condition required Harim to update and have a spray irrigation system approved in order to start deboning. The amended decision will now allow both the spray irrigation and hauling of wastewater, if Harim gains the necessary permit approvals from the Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control.
While no representatives from Allen Harim were present at Monday night's meeting, in previous statements to WBOC the company has said it believed the conditions were restrictive and was working with DNREC to come up with the best wastewater disposal solution.
Opposition to the company has expressed their worries with the company's past DNREC violations. Their fear is violations will continue if left up to DNREC's authority.
"It raises a lot of concerns. You know we've raised and we've challenged DNREC's authority to do this," Keep Our Wells Clean member Keith Steck said.
Steck and others have appealed the original Harim application for the entire deboning operation. That appeal is still pending in Sussex County.
