Beach Patrols Across Delaware Prepare for Beaches to Open

DELAWARE-

Memorial Day weekend looks a little different this year, but one thing is consistent, we can expect more people at the beach. This weekend is the first weekend all Delaware beaches are open.

Captain Todd Fritchman with the Dewey Beach Patrol, hopes people remember just because the beaches are open, it doesn't mean the pandemic is over. Dewey Beach is taking precautions to make sure the public and members of beach patrol are safe.

"We plan on having every block covered with a lifeguard. Our bay beach will be covered this year as well," said Captain Fritchman.

He says beach goers can expect to have a good Memorial Day weekend, as long as they abide by the rules.

"When you come to the beach check in with a lifeguard directly. That way you're getting the information straight from the horses mouth. Use social distancing when talking to a lifeguard but they'll fill you in on safety concerns, and any rules and regulations in effect," said Captain Fritchman.

Classes and testing for lifeguard certifications have not been held yet this spring due to COVID-19. Rehoboth Beach and Dewey Beach patrol say they have enough experienced lifeguards for the busy weekend. People with Lewes originally asked for volunteer ambassadors to assist, but now say they have enough hands on deck.

"We will have lifeguards there, we just won't have as many. We are still recruiting. Because some of the classes were shut down people who weren't certified, can't get certified right now," said Lewes City Manager, Ann Marie Townshend.

If you're heading to Dewey Beach, parking meters are on. Rehoboth plans to activate meters next Friday. Lewes plans to open this Saturday. Paid parking in Bethany kicks in June 1.

Public bathrooms will be open with the beaches this weekend. People with Lewes tell us while their bathrooms will be open, they'll be cleaned multiple times a day. Face coverings are not required on the beach, but are required in public restrooms.

"Enjoy the summer but be respectful. And if you aren't comfortable coming out do not come out. Just because the beaches are open, doesn't mean it's safe for everyone to do everything they want," said Townshend.
