CAMBRIDGE, Md. - Sandra Tripp Jones, Executive Director with Cambridge Waterfront Development Inc. says plans to develop the Choptank River waterfront call for a boardwalk, a park, housing and a slew of businesses.
"We've had conversations with probably a dozen different developers and they've actually been very helpful in shaping our thinking in what will work there," Tripp-Jones.
Maryland Governor Larry Hogan has announced Cambridge will tap into the state's strategic demolition fund.
The money will go toward demolition of the old Dorchester General Hospital, which closed in October. Along with Governor's Hall and other nearby properties.
Some Downtown business owners we spoke with have expressed concern about the project. Those we spoke say they do not want to be forgotten. Tripp-Jones says she wants downtown and the new development to work as partners.
"We share their concern that they not be cannibalized for this project and partly because of that and partly because retail is not a real growing area of business at this point. We're looking mostly at restaurant, microbrewery, hotel, other activities that are water related," Tripp-Jones said.
Construction will get underway at the waterfront early next year with demolition slated to be completed by Spring of 2024.
