Maryland National Guard Led by All Women

SNOW HILL, Md.- A historic chapter for our military: three women are now in command of the Maryland National Guard, making the state the only National Guard led by all women.

One of those leaders is Janeen Birckhead from Snow Hill. She's the assistant adjutant general of Maryland.

It's a role she says she's excited to have.

"Someone who looks like me, they can see themselves in me, they know that they can preserve," says Birckhead.

Birckhead is responsible for leading and training more than 4,000 Maryland soldiers and she says she contributes her success to Delmarva.

"I think a big part of who I am, comes from the Eastern Shore, so hard work and being a part of a small community, I think is important."

Thirty-four-year old Lt. Jennifer Alston, who is a part of the Maryland National Guar, says seeing an all women's leadership gives her hope.

"Starting off in my career, it's encouraging to see that it's possible to rise up in the ranks of our organization to the highest level," says Alston.

A new beginning providing inspiration to many women in the military.
