CAMBRIDGE, Md. - Before sunrise, Maritza Sanchez is busy outside worrying about how to move her trash.
The trashcans supplied by Chesapeake Waste Industries are part of a recent change Cambridge has made to collecting waste.
Residents are required to use them, but for Sanchez, a 73 year-old living alone, they're too heavy.
"I don't need it," Sanchez said. "It's just one bag and it's at the bottom of it."
So far, Sanchez has been asking friends and neighbors to help move the trash, but she and other neighbors are asking the city - why the switch?
"At my age, I don't want to worry about things that are taken for granted," Sanchez said. "[Cambridge] Public Works was doing a great job. Why did they change?"
Oden Wheeler from Cambridge Public Works says the main reason for the switch was to save taxpayer money. Hiring a private contractor would help service nearly 4,500 households in the area.
"Our capital outlay in order to accomplish all of that was pretty astronomical and would have been a real cost to the citizens," Wheeler said.
As for the complaints, Wheeler says the city needs more time to solve them.
"It is going to take us a couple of months to work through all the issues," Wheeler said.
Time that Maritza and neighbors don't want to wait for.
"It's inconvenient," Sanchez said.
