SALISBURY, Md.- Discussions continue about Salisbury's proposed curfew for teens. It's been a hotly debated topic for months. The curfew would keep teenagers off the streets after 10 p.m. each night.
Concerns ranging from how the curfew will be enforced, to creating programs for teens, have been at the center of discussion at community meetings. Mark Thompson, coordinator for student mentoring in Wicomico County, said for the curfew to work it will take more than just police enforcement.
Thompson said other social agencies have to work with the police department to effectively address the juvenile curfew issues.
Thompson recommends creating an evening reporting center to provide a holistic approach to addressing the juvenile curfew issue in Salisbury.
"You bring the youth along with the parent together to find what's really causing that child to be out on the street and come up with an assessment," Thompson said. "You do a complete assessment right then, that night while they're there, so when that parent leaves with their child, they'll have a plan in place on how to prevent this and what the next steps are going to be for helping that family to prevent their child from being on the street."
The Salisbury City Council will continue discussions regarding the proposed curfew. The date for the next upcoming meeting addressing the proposed curfew has not been set on the council's agenda.
