SMYRNA, Del.- A woman was shot to death Tuesday morning in the front parking lot of Smyrna Middle School located on Duck Creek Parkway in Smyrna, according to police.
No students at the school were wounded in the shooting, which happened just after 10:15 a.m., Smyrna police said. The victim, a 38-year-old Smyrna woman, was later pronounced dead at the scene, according to police.
Delaware State Police, who are assisting Smyrna police with the homicide investigation, said it appears that the victim and the 47-year-old male suspect, also from Smyrna, got into an argument in the school parking lot when he shot her. The suspect then took off in a vehicle, which led police on a chase that ended when the vehicle crashed into a tree in Galena, Md. The suspect was airlifted from the scene and is being treated at a Maryland hospital.
Police, who said they believe the shooting was “domestic-related," have not yet released the names of the suspect nor the victim.
The school was placed on modified lockdown as police investigated the incident. All students and staff were accounted for and there was no active threat to the public, according to investigators. The victim was not a school employee, police said.
According to police, the investigation is ongoing and more information will be released as it becomes available.
