Grocery Cart Wheels

SEAFORD, DE - A new grocery store could soon be coming to Seaford, as city officials prepare for a final public hearing Tuesday on plans to bring an Aldi to the area.

The proposed location for the store is currently an empty field just south of the Duck-In Car Wash on Route 13. The project has been in development for several months and is now entering its final site plan review by the city council.

The prospect of an Aldi is already generating interest from local residents like Cydney Sherman,

“I currently go to the one in Salisbury once a week, so that will be saving me time, and also putting more money in the Seaford budget, and I like that idea,” Sherman said.

The store is also appealing to shoppers looking for more affordable options. Judy Yanega said she’s ready to welcome the grocery chain to town.

“I’m looking forward to it — I’ve been in Aldi’s, and they have some really nice deals,” she said.

Since the site is located along a state-maintained road, additional approvals will be needed before construction can begin. There is currently no set timeline for when work might start.

Still, Seaford officials see the project as part of a broader trend of growth in the city. Mayor Matt MacCoy called the Aldi proposal a significant milestone for the community.

“The Aldi project is symbolic of the progress and direction of Seaford. Many years of hard work is beginning to pay off,” he said in part in a statement to WBOC.

The development coincides with other efforts to spur economic activity in Seaford, including the new Nylon Capital Shopping Center on the city’s west side and a push for more investment in downtown.

“It’s been very encouraging to me — my husband and I moved here 5 years ago, and a lot of the areas were depressed, and we’re seeing them come back and that is very exciting,” Sherman added.
