SALISBURY, Md.- A local Boy Scout has built a brand new ‘Book Locker’ at the Westside Community Center in Bivalve. The locker allows those in remote areas of the county to order a book from the library, which Wicomico County Public Library will drop off at the book locker for pick up.
Boy Scout Sammy Pasmore says he chose to help the library for his eagle scout project for a specific reason.
“I feel like you don’t often see libraries being chosen for help. It's a lot of the time you know trails where they built those bridges over the water or you know campground stuff like that and so I thought the library was unique.”
Pasmore says the plan was to put the book locker inside the Westside Community Center, but that would limit the hours people could come pick up a book.
“Originally they were just gonna put it inside and that would’ve solved all of their problems but then I thought about it since the West Side Community Center, is not open that often and so it’s generally closed and people can’t access it, and so like putting it outside it will be accessible no matter if it’s closed.”
Pasmore says he hopes this will have a positive impact on those who may not be able to afford books.
“Not everyone can afford reading. Nowadays we have electronic reading and that’s great but it’s like $100 for a Kindle or something. And books aren’t cheap,” said Pasmore.
Seth Hershberger, Director of the Wicomico County Public Library says he is grateful for Pasmore’s work and dedication to his community.
"Wicomico county is a big county and we want to make sure that everyone has access," said Hershberger.
Pasmore and the county are now waiting for the book locker to install hopefully within the coming months.
