MILFORD, Del.- The Food Bank of Delaware is about ready to stock shelves and more at it's new location.
"We wanted to create, really, a place for folks to come to," explained Food Bank Vice President of External Affairs Chad Robinson, emphasizing the organization's broader vision.
Beyond catering solely to those in need of food, plans include transforming a section into a public café, with proceeds benefiting the food bank. The café's produce will originate from the facility's front garden.
The garden is expected to thrive with the help of numerous volunteers, including members from the Delaware Veterans Home and the Milford Boys and Girls Club, both situated adjacent to the property.
Kim Turner, Communications Director at the Delaware Food Bank, revealed a new cooking classroom furnished with top-grade equipment, perfect for both educational and restaurant-style settings.
"We will be able to train people for new careers in culinary arts, warehousing and logistics," she said.
About $3.5 million still needs to be raised for the $34 million project to be considered fully funded. Donate here.
Robinson expressed gratitude to everyone who has contributed their time and money.
"They say it takes a village and we have seen that village come out and we are just incredibly thankful," he said.
Landscaping, paving, and the addition of warehouse equipment are in progress for the finishing touches. A ribbon-cutting ceremony is on schedule for mid-January.
