BERLIN, Md. - Fire officials say one person was injured while escaping from the house fire.

The Worcester County Fire Marshal's Office say the fire happened around 11 a.m. at a home on Sinepuxent Road. Crews reportedly arrived to find smoke come from all sides of the home. Fire officials say the fire was quickly brought under control and crews searched for anyone still inside. Crews then stayed on scene for around two hours performing overhaul operations to make sure the fire was completely extinguished.

Deputies from the Worcester County Fire Marshal’s Office responded to the scene and conducted a thorough fire scene examination. Officials say the fire originated in a bedroom within the home where a person was sleeping. The person was reportedly transported to an area hospital for minor injuries sustained from jumping out of a window to escape the fire.

Fire Marshals say the cause of the fire remains under investigation. The residents are being assisted by the American Red Cross.

Fire Marshal Matthew Owens reminds the public that working smoke alarms are an absolute necessity to alert occupants of a fire before it gets out of control. Smoke alarms should be installed in every sleeping room and on every floor of a home. They should be checked monthly, batteries changed bi-annually and discarded and completely replaced after 10 years. If you cannot afford a smoke alarm, contact your local fire department for a free one. Smoke alarms save lives but only if they are in good working order. Check your smoke alarm today!
