CRISFIELD, Md. -- As Tropical Storm Ophelia moves away from Delmarva, neighbors in Crisfield are still trying to keep their heads above water amidst coastal flooding.

As high tide began shortly after 8 a.m. Sunday, flooding seemed to reach several feet deep on Hall Hwy. and Wynfall Ave., keeping neighbors in their homes and cars off the roads.

"It's scary, it really is scary," says Rose Stream. "I mean, I don't know if the water's going to come in the house. It's a situation to think about. It's serious. We took our car up to Food Lion and left it there in the parking area. We figured since we had lost a car before, and we didn't know how bad it was going to be, we thought it'd be better if we just move our car."

Many other neighbors moved their cars as well, anticipating the worst. Only a few brave passengers took the risk. Even some first responders headed toward TidalHealth on Hall Hwy. were forced to turn around, unable to pass through deep water.

"It gets horrible, and I don't think I want to risk my vehicle for a $13 job because they're not going to buy me a new one," says Noelle Adcock, who took time off from her job to avoid driving.

However, some neighbors say the impact of Ophelia was minor compared to that of other tropical storms they've weathered in the past.

"I measure it by how far the water reaches on our front steps," says Adrian Tyler. "If the water goes past a little bit of our steps, we're getting out. But, it never got to that point."

Neighbors say they expect it to be at least one week before the water clears. The town placed a road closure sign on Hall Hwy. to deter people from driving there unless it is necessary.
