DOVER, De. - As we try to remain vigilant during this COVID-19 pandemic, new CDC guidelines suggest wearing a mask in high traffic places such as the grocery store.
But these are not supposed to be medical grade masks, which hospitals are in short supply of.
These should be items you can find around your home, such as a bandana, a scarf, or even a t-shirt.
The CDC recommends having multiple layers of fabric, and it should be secured with ties or loops over the ear, with a snug fit under the nose and chin.
These masks are to prevent you from spreading germs to others, and from others spreading their germs to you.
Medical professionals want to stress that whether you're wearing a bandana, a scarf, or even a homemade mask - once you've worn it outside the home, you want to consider it dirty, so as soon as you take it off your face, you want to throw it directly into the washer so you can make sure it's sanitized before you wear it again.
Be careful not to touch your eyes, nose, or mouth when removing the mask to prevent the spread of germs. You should not wear a mask if you have difficulty breathing, and you should not place one on a baby or child under the age of two.
And remember, the best way you can protect yourself from the spread of COVID-19?
Staying home.
