DOVER, Del.- Delaware Gov. John Carney is proposing a $4.6 billion operating budget for the upcoming fiscal year, he announced on Thursday.
The spending plan represents an increase in spending of nearly 4 percent and is coupled with a proposals to spend $55 million on a grant in aid package and $829 million in the state’s capital budget.
Carney has proposed spending the majority of a projected $200 million surplus on a number of issues like the environment, Wilmington schools, and economic development.
Among the governor’s proposals is a $50 million investment into a new clean water fund. He also wants to spend an equal amount of money building a new school in Wilmington and funding additional school renovations in the city.
Carney’s budget will be filed Thursday and vetted by lawmakers in the coming weeks.
A spending plan must be passed by the end of the legislative session in June.
