LEWES,DE-Though Hurricane Florence has switched gears and is heading towards the Carolinas, some in Delmarva are still preparing for possible rain and flooding.
That includes Delaware's Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control.
In case the hurricane switches gears, today DNREC put up flood barriers at their Lewes Field Facility to ensure their emergency response equipment remained safe during inclement weather.
"We are prone to flooding in this area, so we have a shop where we keep our equipment, and we have flood barriers that we need to install in there," Scott Figurski, with DNREC said.
Figurski says the equipment DNREC is trying to keep safe is often used in emergency situations in hurricanes and storms. If it is damaged, DNREC will not be able to assist in emergency response should the hurricane switch paths.
Governor Carney was also in attendance today to witness the barriers going up, he says despite Florence's recent change up, preparation like this is still useful to prepare for the next storm.
DNREC says they have also strategiclly scattered equipment around the Delmarva area to ensure they have readily available equipment should they need it.
Some of the equipment, they said, is located north and south of Indian River Inlet. They hope this will help them respond to flooding and dune breaches should they need to react quickly.
