Smyrna Police Arrest Case Worker for Rape of Vulnerable Adult

SMYRNA, Del.- Smyrna police have arrested a case worker accused of raping a woman who lives in a group home for vulnerable adults. 

Police said that on Sunday, May 23, detectives learned that the victim was at Kent General Hospital for treatment of a sexual assault which had occurred in Smyrna.  Investigators met with the victim and hospital staff and confirmed the allegations, according to police. 

Police said the victim was a resident of a group home for vulnerable adults.  Investigators said a case worker assigned to the home, identified as Carlette Wheeler, 46, of Dover, forcibly raped and assaulted the victim while he was alone with her.  

After an investigation, detectives obtained warrants for Wheeler and he turned himself in to police on May 27. He was arraigned via video court in JP #2 on the charges of first- and second-degree rape, four counts of third-degree unlawful sexual contact, sexual harassment, and indecent exposure.  

After arraignment, Wheeler was committed to the Sussex Correctional Institute in lieu of $164,200 secured bond.
