LAUREL, De. - People still had to work outside today on Delmarva, even though temperatures were soaring in the 90s. Outdoor workers in Western Sussex County are facing a heatwave lasting until the end of the week.
Some workers pushing through the heat are Walmart employees pushing shopping carts. Walmart employee Jadon Hayward said the hot weather is nothing new to him.
"It's tough. I have to stay hydrated and get in the shade when I can, but it's definitely a tough task. I go through rain and all of it. I have to deal with all the inclement weather every day," says Hayward.
Other people working through the warmth are providing fresh produce for the Delmarva area. Workers at a watermelon distribution center place watermelons along a conveyor belt and load them onto school buses. They are outside for hours.
Truck driver, Robert Wallace, who transports the watermelons, said this work is hard in the heat.
"It's another day, you just got to do everything you can to keep hydrated, drink a lot of water, and get the job done," says Wallace.
Both groups said it is important for them to get out of the sun when possible.
"The watermelon workers have the hardest job. They stand in the heat all day. I get a chance to be in air conditioning sometimes and these guys are working, bending down, picking up watermelons, and making sure the right one goes in the bin. It's a hard job," continues Wallace.
Although the heat increases, the work doesn't stop.
