OCEAN CITY, Md.- The Maryland Public Service Commission on Thursday approved Danish company Ørsted's request to install 12 megawatt wind turbines as part of its offshore Skipjack Wind Farm project.
The taller turbines could mean fewer would be installed.
The Skipjack Wind Farm is a 120 megawatt offshore wind farm under development 19.5 miles off the Maryland-Delaware coast. Ørsted said the project will create thousands of jobs in the Delmarva region and generate enough clean energy to power 35,000 homes.
“Ørsted is pleased that the Maryland Public Service Commission approved the project’s longstanding commitment to use the best commercially available turbine technology,” said Brady Walker, Ørsted’s Mid-Atlantic market manager. “The project will continue to engage with all stakeholders on creating a project that all Marylanders can be proud of."
Ocean City, Md., leaders are against the project, fearing they will hamper views from the beach, and negatively impact tourism.
