SALISBURY, Md. - Salisbury University has announced new safety initiatives in the wake of an off-campus shooting that injured three students.
The shooting took place on September 14 about a mile away from campus.
The University is adding five new officers to its force over roughly two dozen officers.
SU will work with other police in the City to continue assisting with and responding to calls off campus.
SU's Chief of Staff Eli Modlin says the University took the incident very seriously.
"Our President has instituted an all hands on deck, really an all hands on deck, really a multi-pronged approach to address the safety concerns both on and off campus," he said.
Leah Wynn is a freshman and says gunfire ringing out near campus just weeks into her college experience was a frightening ordeal.
"It was very scary especially because there wee students involved that did get hurt so it's not just some local crime scene incident," she said.
Marina Keating, a sophomore is hopeful the safety measures will work.
"I do enjoy having like the blue lights around campus that makes me feel a lot safer," she said.
Wynn says she appreciates the University tackling these issues.
"I think the fact that they were on top of it and as quick as they were on top of it was really reassuring so it wasn't something that was prolonged," she said.
Modlin says the University will also consult students, including forming a task force to identify security risks.
"Certainly many of the changes and updates that you've heard recently are related to things we've heard from students," he said.
In addition to the policing changes, SU also says it will work on communicating safety tips and emergency alert protocols.
