SOMERSET COUNTY, Md. — The Somerset County Sheriff's Office will soon return to providing around-the-clock patrol coverage.
Sheriff Ronnie Howard said the department's recent hiring success is due to salary increases approved by the Somerset County Commissioners as part of the county's FY2027 budget.
"We had some certified officers leave other agencies to come here, which was improved with the pay raise that the County Commissioners approved for this July," Howard said. "They've been very good to work with."
According to the sheriff's office, the department has already hired one certified deputy and expects to recruit additional experienced officers in the future as staffing continues to improve.
Residents say the return of 24/7 patrols provides added peace of mind.
"Always having the patrol units out there... 24/7... yeah, it gives ease of mind to me, knowing that my friends and family and everybody are safe," Somerset County resident James Daniels said.
Officials say restoring continuous patrol coverage will allow deputies to respond more effectively to emergencies and better meet the needs of the community.
The Somerset County Sheriff's Office says full-time, around-the-clock patrol operations are scheduled to begin Aug. 20, 2026.
