Mariner's point

CHINCOTEAGUE ISLAND, Va.- The mayor of Chincoteague Island says the town is asking the Army Corp of Engineers for help replenishing it's southern inlet, Mariner's Point. Mayor Arthur Leonard says the topography has changed so much that more of the ocean's current is coming into the inlet and eroding the land.

"If we do nothing, if we wait mother nature doesn't wait. She is just going to keep eroding and eroding and eroding away and then you have to put it back. So the more time you wait the more work you're going to have in the future," said Leonard. "It'll get to the point where we'll no longer be able to use Mariner's point we'll loose the memorials that are down here... it's got to be done. It's got to be taken care of."

Leonard says Mariner's point is a vital part of the town's tourism, which is essential to the town's economy.

Leonard says the town is asking the Army Corp of Engineers for help, as well as the state of Virginia.
