FORECAST DISCUSSION

Normal high: 73°F. Normal low: 51°F.

Thursday has been a pleasant day on Delmarva with gentle winds under a partly to mostly sunny skies.

Changes are in the forecast for Thursday night. A cold front is approaching from the northwest. Clouds will increase Thursday evening, with a low chance for a pop-up shower or thunderstorm on the Midshore and over Delaware. Showers and a few thunderstorms will become more widespread over the peninsula after midnight. Any storms could feature some gusty downpours and lightning, but severe thunderstorms are not likely.

As the front makes its push across Delmarva on Friday, umbrellas will be a must-have accessory, as we'll see on-and-off rain throughout the day, again with a few embedded thunderstorms that could feature gusty downpours and lightning. Severe thunderstorms are not likely.

The front clears the region by Saturday and high pressure builds in, making for a very nice Mother's Day weekend. Expect mostly sunny skies Saturday with highs in the low 70s, and partly cloudy skies on Sunday with highs in the mid 70s.

Pleasantly seasonable weather continues on Monday.

Longer-range guidance is suggesting that a low pressure system will develop over the Deep South early next week, and could bring another round of rain and thunder to Delmarva in the Tuesday-Wednesday timeframe. Timing and rain intensity is still quite uncertain at this point, so watch this space for updates.

In the long range, temperatures are expected to average above normal, and precipitation near normal for May 15 - May 21.
