Normal high: 86°F. Normal low: 66°F.
After a quiet start, Sunday is going to become an active day with strong and possibly severe thunderstorms in the afternoon and evening.
A stationary frontal boundary remains draped just south of Delmarva. As we work our way into Sunday afternoon, an impulse of energy along the front will trigger showers in the early afternoon, which will develop into thunderstorms by late afternoon and evening. As is often the case with convective thunderstorms, not everyone will see a storm all evening, but any storms could be strong to severe.
The Midshore and Delaware are under a Level 1 "Marginal" threat for severe weather, with much of the Lower Eastern Shore and Accomack County under a Level 2 "Slight" threat for severe weather. Damaging wind gusts, frequent lightning, and flooding downpours are the main threats. There is a low, but non-zero threat for a tornado, with the highest threat along the Chesapeake Bay.
Strong thunderstorms are expected to continue into Sunday evening and possibly into early Monday morning.
Showers could continue into the Monday morning commute, then we'll dry out with skies becoming partly to mostly sunny by Monday afternoon with afternoon temperatures near 90°F.
High pressure will attempt to build in from the northeast and could push that frontal boundary far enough south to make for nice summer days on Tuesday and Wednesday, with partly to mostly sunny skies and highs in the upper 80s.
However that pesky front could return later in the week, with our longer-range guidance suggesting a return of scattered showers and possibly some thunder Thursday through Saturday.
In the long range, temperatures are expected to be above normal, and precipitation near normal for Aug 23 - Aug 29.
In the Tropics: There are no areas of development interest at this time.
The Atlantic hurricane season ends on November 30.
