DOVER, Del.- It was just last month that Dover High Alumni came to say their final goodbyes to the old Dover High School. Capital School District is now one step closer to tearing down the building.
Last week, Capital School District put out a request for proposals for contractors to bid on the demolition project.
“We anticipate the demolition to occur and be completed somewhere around November til December,” said Superintendent Dr. Michael Thomas.
Dr. Thomas says there is currently summer school taking place at the old high school, along with the KCCS, which will run there through September. The school district also plans on some asbestos abatement throughout the building to make sure it’s clean before demolition.
Although many are sad to see the building go down, Dr. Thomas says it was not cost effective to keep the building up.
“The cost of renovations that building was equal to the costs of new construction and it only sat on 44 acres of land,” said Dr. Thomas.
Plans to tear down the building are in the works. However, the athletic fields will remain in tact.
“The district will still maintain the grounds. We have athletic fields there that are our middle school students will be using,” said Dr. Thomas. “Certainly the old turf fields, the baseball/softball field, field hockey field. They’ll be able to practice on those and play at the middle school level so they’re very excited about that.”
The school district will be accepting bids until August 7th.
