MARYLAND - The Maryland Department of Natural Resources and Maryland Department of Agriculture say lanternflies have been spotted hatching around the state of Maryland. The department is asking residents to report any sights of the insects.
The Maryland Department of Agriculture says there have been lanterflies spotted in several counties in the state. The first sighting was in Charles County with additional hatches in Annapolis.
According to Maryland DNR, lanterflies can"harm our trees, plants, and crops". They say it is important to check your vehicles and equipment for any signs of the insects when you travel.
The state has provided a reporting site where anyone who spots a lanternfly can report the place and submit a photo of it. Report your lanternfly spotting here.
