DENTON, Md. - Police in Caroline County say a student is in custody after posting a threat on social media. The Caroline County Sheriff's Office says the threat was posted Sunday night against Colonel Richardson High School and Middle School.

Police say they were able to locate and arrest the student 15 minutes after the threat was made. He is currently being held at the Department of Juvenile Services, according to police.

"We're just happy social media was our friend," Caroline County Sheriff Randy Bounds said. "It's not always our friend, but it was our friend Sunday night in that we were notified immediately through multiple sources."

School leaders say nearly half of students didn't show up to the high school on Monday and more than a third did not attend Colonel Richardson Middle School.

All those absences will be excused, according to Superintendent Patricia Saelens.

Bounds says they are upping police presence at the schools as a precaution.
