Cheswold Gets $150,000 from State for "Old Town" Fire Hydrants

CHESWOLD, Del.- Cheswold will be putting $150,000 in state grant money toward new fire hydrants in the "Old Town" community.

Town Manager Sam Callender said the state had allocated money for the effort, which aims to improve safety in "Old Town" after a number of fires, including a fatal fire last year.

Railroad tracks lie between "Old Town" and the nearest fire hydrant, which is located outside the Cheswold Volunteer Fire Company. A train crossing the intersection of Main Street and McKee Road could potentially block off direct access to Old Town for first responders.

Callender said the town is still waiting for Tidewater Utilities to bring forth a plan to extend water lines to "Old Town."
