CRISFIELD, Md.- Construction and renovations to Crisfield High School are wrapping up as the start of the school year draws near.
The school has partnered with the Headstart, a program that teaches children social and academic skills. The partnership allowed for grant funding, roughly $4 million is being pumped into the project.
"We were able to get the state to participate in the project. They were excited about the cooperative use opportunity. We were excited because we have an early childhood initiative in Somerset County," Daniele Haley, Supervisor of facilities and capital planning for the Somerset County Board of Education, said.
This is the first time in five years that Headstart will be in the same building. Hurricane Sandy condemned the other building they were using in 2012.
"I'm so happy that we can all be under one roof instead of seperate entities, because I think that'll be better for the children," Headstart Sight Coordinator Linda Stuckey said.
There are new classrooms and offices within the new part of the building. Opportunities may become available in the future to allow high school students to help out with the Headstart kids.
"A kind of service learning experience that these students can go over there and work with some of the younger students during the school hours," Crisfield High School Principal, Tony Bevilacqua, said.
The classrooms and other office spaces are set to open in two weeks for the start of the school year.
Other renovations are being made to the locker rooms and weight room, however they aren't projected to be completed until November.
