CAMBRIDGE, Md.- Dorchester County is home to the first Boys and Girls Club organization on Maryland's Eastern Shore.
Gabe Butler never expected to leave his job and enter the nonprofit world, but as local leader of Cambridge's Boys and Girls Club, he's doing just that and mentoring kids in the process.
"It's a great opportunity. And I really want every kid that comes through the doors to reach their full potential," Butler said.
Through the Boys and Girls Club of Metropolitan Baltimore and the Office of the Governor, the facility was made a reality.
The Boys and Girls Club of America provides sports and recreation as well as after school programs for kids in each area a club is located.
President and CEO Jeff Breslin of the Boys and Girls Club of Metropolitan Baltimore says there is a clear need for this program in the community.
"Our first day of summer camp started Monday, and at opening 8:30 a.m. we had 45 kids registered and 45 kids at the door so that tells us that there's an incredible opportunity and an incredible need here in Cambridge."
Of the 45 kids, and the numerous activities put on by the club, they all have a favorite.
"The basketball and soccer," "Kickball and basketball" and "computers and drawing" were some of the kids favorites.
With Governor Larry Hogan and plentiful scissors on hand for the ribbon cutting, further Boys and Girls Club expansions on the shore are expected.
A second Cambridge club is in the works, with other Eastern Shore towns also being considered down the road.
