CAMBRIDGE, Md.- One person died and three others were injured - including two firefighters - following an early Tuesday morning house fire in Cambridge, authorities say.
According to the Rescue Fire Company in Cambridge, the three alarm fire broke out early Tuesday morning at a home in the 1000 block of Locust Street. Firefighters on the scene told WBOC one person was killed, and another person is in the hospital after jumping out a window from the second floor of the home. Firefighters would not confirm if the deceased was a man, woman, or child. Two firefighters from the Rescue Fire Company were also sent to the hospital with injuries, but as of 4:30 a.m. fire officials said they were being released.
Nearby neighbors told WBOC the bright glow of the flames was unlike something they had ever seen before.
"I went outside and the house was in total flames. It was like something you see in the movies," said neighbor Carlos Zayas.
The home was destroyed by the fire, and is considered a total loss, although the exact estimation of damage is not yet known. Fire officials said there was also minor damage to two next door homes. Fire officials on scene Tuesday afternoon said there was still plenty of work to be done before the cause of the fire can be determined.
"Do the physical examination of the scene which is what we're doing now. And once we do that, we'll bring in all the evidence that we find together to try and come up with a determination. So it's going to be a little while before we have a final determination," said Joe Flanagan of the Maryland State Fire Marshall's Office.
Eleven fire companies responded to the scene to assist with the fire. Both the Maryland State Fire Marshall's Office and Cambridge Police Department are investigating.
