Macy’s Store in Salisbury to Close

SALISBURY, Md.- After 29 years at the Centre at Salisbury mall, Macy's department store will close its doors by March.

Store employees were notified Monday about the decision to close, according to a Macy's spokesperson. Regular, non-seasonal employees will be eligible for severance, including outplacement resources.

A clearance sale will begin in January 2020 and run for approximately eight to 12 weeks, according to Macy's corporate officials.

Macy's will be the second anchor store at the Centre at Salisbury to close in less than a year's time. Sears closed its doors in March.

But Macy's is not the only store that could close. Pier 1 Imports announced Tuesday that they are also downsizing nationwide.

The retail giant plans to close up to 450 locations, which makes up nearly half of its 942 stores.

The Fort Worth, Texas-based home goods retailer would not confirm if the closures are due to poor sales.

Other news outlets report the company as saying the decision to reduce its store footprint is needed "to better align its business with the current operating environment."

Pier 1 Imports has not announced yet which locations will close, but Delmarva has several store locations.

Many shoppers on Delmarva are sad to see the possibility of both retail giants leave the shore.
