SALISBURY, Md.- The City of Salisbury is using a coyote decoy to address problems with geese downtown. Mayor Jake Day said it is a part of the city's Market Street Stormwater Retrofit Project, to enhance the downtown area, and the decoys are being used to scare the geese away.
"The geese are annoying. They're everywhere. They can be a nuisance from a noise standpoint and they get in the way of traffic. Their waste is actually also a major polluter of the Wicomico River and Chesapeake Bay," Day said.
Day said the "urban coyote" decoy is an attempted solution to this problem. The city's Retro Fit Project is designed to enhance the Downtown Riverwalk area with new landscaping, railing and surface treatments. It also is designed to help keep the river and bay waters clean.
Day said the decoy is not a scientific method, but is effective in keeping the geese away. He said the city will also incorporate another project citywide to control the geese population by preventing them from reproducing in the downtown area.
Day said the Downtown Market Street Project will be completed by the spring/summer of 2016. He said he doesn't foresee the geese being a problem when the area opens.
