LEWES, Del.- After the city of Lewes announced plans to address its feral cat population and the Brandywine Valley SPCA got involved, the two entities are holding a town hall on the issue Monday evening.
"Part of the reason for tonight's meeting is to update folks about the progress that's been made but also to let them know about the resources that are still available," explains BVSPCA Delaware Director Walter Fenstermacher. "So whether that is spay or neuter, if they need help with a food pantry program or if they just need general education."
Fenstermacher says some cats have been trapped, spayed/neutered, and re-released and others have been placed in barn cat programs. Fenstermacher says they aim to put some cats up for adoption as well and addressed concerns that some indoor/outdoor cats could be picked up in the process.
"All the animals that have been brought in for this program have been spayed or neutered, scanned for a microchip, and they've been posted to our lost and found pages state wide," he says. "So we know that these animals were given every opportunity if they were owned to get back to that family."
Many cat lovers in Lewes say they were glad to hear the program would not euthanize cats, as some feared originally.
"Right away I was concerned about what was going to happen to the cats," says Michiko Seto. "So if they are going to be able to get taken care of and be put in homes if they are able to be adopted that would be great."
The Brandywine Valley SPCA and Lewes Town Hall meeting is being held at 6:30 p.m. Lewes Mayor Ted Becker says the event will be held at the Margaret Rollins Community Center.
