SALISBURY, Md.- If you're planning on heading to the National Folk Festival this weekend, getting there is going to take some extra time.
Traffic started to form Friday morning, and drivers in the area said they've never seen traffic this bad before in Salisbury.
"I come from New York and it's almost as bad as it was there," Jason Wieland said.
It caused a nightmare for drivers trying to navigate through and around Downtown Salisbury.
"It's way backed up, more than it usually is. Usually you can just go straight down," Kevin Jones said.
The traffic pile up started this morning when the final road closures went into effect at 6 a.m.
Salisbury Director of Field Operations, Tom Stevenson, said crews set up jersey barriers and some soft openings manned by police.
"We're seeing some stacking already especially with local folks that are trying to take their normal route. Once they become accustomed to the closure and find alternative routes, I think it'll ease a little bit," Stevenson said.
Stevenson also said there are real time traffic cameras in place, and they have the ability to change signals if need be. But earlier this morning he said an accident took out the signal at Route 13 and Broad Street.
"That contributed to addition traffic problems... Which probably gave the perception that this is going to be really challenging," Stevenson said.
Organizers have also added designated visitor parking lots near the civic center to help with the flow of traffic.
Festival goers are encouraging people to hop aboard shuttles that will run every 15-minutes to and from Downtown Salisbury.
