POCOMOKE CITY, Md.- The Pocomoke City Volunteer Fire Company; alongside multiple other units, battled a Saturday morning fire that destroyed a lumber mill building.
Officials say the fire happened at the Eastern Shore Forest Products complex, located at 33677 Peach Orchard Road.
The three-alarm fire took more than 130 first responding firefighters nine hours to control. Company spokesman Joe Hinson says the cause of the fire is still unknown. No one was hurt in the blaze.
Hinson says rebuilding will begin immediately. The company's president, Tom Johnson, added that no employees and customers would be affected by the setback caused by the fire; production is expected to resume as soon as this week.
"It's a setback, but we've had contingency plans for," Johnson said. "We'd like to thank all those who helped fight the blaze. Without their brave efforts, the loss could have been much greater."
Hinson says the mill produces animal bedding products, including a large number of wood shavings.
The Maryland State Fire Marshal's Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
