DOVER, Del.- Two firefighters and one other person were taken to the hospital following a Tuesday morning fire that broke out a three-story apartment complex in Dover.
The fire occurred shortly after 7 a.m. at the complex, located at the Greens at Cedar Chase at 1700 N. DuPont Highway. Officials with the Dover Fire Department said the blaze started in an apartment building stairwell and from there spread to the apartments on the third floor. From there, several people had to be rescued from some of the apartments.
A child was taken down by a ladder by a Dover police officer and a firefighter. Another person jumped from one of the apartments, according to officials. That person was taken to the hospital for unspecified injuries.
Officials said that at one point one firefighter was trapped after a ceiling collapsed and had to be helped out of the building. He was taken to Kent General Hospital for observation, according to officials. Another firefighter suffered a hand injury and was taken to KGH as well.
The fire was placed under control before 8 a.m. Two apartment were burned out while several others sustained smoke damage.
The Red Cross said that while the fire displaced 22 people, the apartment complex's owner was able to find accomodations on site and at a sister location.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Delaware State Fire Marshal's Office.
