WEST OCEAN CITY, Md. - A popular restaurant in West Ocean City is closed Tuesday after a gas leak sent several people to the hospital.

It happened around 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Applebee's restaurant on Ocean Gateway, according to authorities.

Cathy Chuck, the Vice President and Public Relations person with The Rose Group, who owns Applebee's, tells WBOC Carbon Monoxide leaked into the building and a few employees were taken to both Peninsula Regional Medical Center and Atlantic General Hospital out of caution.

Authorities say several fire companies responded, including the Ocean City Fire Department.

Chuck added that the restaurant will remain closed until further notice.

"Our employees and our customers in the Ocean City area are our top priority," said Chuck. "It is our responsibility to ensure their safety, so we are working with local experts to see if there are elevated levels at this time."

Chuck said they will remain closed until they can guarantee the site is secure for both employees and customers.

No word yet on what caused the gas leak. More information was forthcoming.
