SALISBURY, Md. - The Wicomico County Board of Education has issued two possible calendars for the 2017-2018 school year, and only one of them has students returning after Labor Day.

The board is seeking public input on the options prior to a discussion about the calendar at its Nov. 15 board meeting.

The draft calendar with a pre-Labor Day start would begin school on Monday, Aug. 28, and end the year on Tuesday, June 5.

The draft calendar with a post-Labor Day start would begin school on Tuesday, Sept. 5, and end the year on Tuesday, June 12.

Both versions can be accessed from the www.wcboe.org home page by clicking on the Calendar Input button.

Maryland Governor Larry Hogan issued an executive order in August requiring that Maryland public schools begin school after Labor Day and end by June 15, unless a school system is granted a waiver.

Wicomico County is one of several school systems and professional educational organizations that believe school calendar decisions are best made at the local level with community input. Some of these school districts, like Wicomico, are preparing draft calendars both with a post-Labor Day start and with a locally determined start date and gathering public input.
