Wicomico County Council Approves Pickleball Complex

Conceptual site plan for Pickleball Complex on Churchill Ave in Salisbury

SALISBURY Md.- The Wicomico County Council on Tuesday voted in favor of a project that will bring 12 new pickleball courts to Harmon Field behind the YMCA in Salisbury.

Currently, the field is a baseball field with one basketball court, a small playground and no lights. The project will be funded through a $700,000 grant from the state and an additional $300,000 from the YMCA. Josh West has been advocating for the project and for more pickleball courts in Salisbury.

“Right now there are only four courts in Wicomico County and none of them are in Salisbury proper, so we are trying to service the community as a whole and the majority of the population which resides in city limits,” West said.

The project would also include a second basketball court, outdoor seating, and areas with shade structures. Members of the Delmarva Pony League, like Otis Ezley, pushed for the field to stay as a baseball field since the field can adapt to different age groups and playing on other fields in the community is difficult and expensive.

“For the Pony League aspect, the field is right here in our back corner. We have used it regularly, we have always used it, and we would like to keep it,” Ezley said.

Wicomico County Recreation and Parks Director Steve Miller said he would assist the Pony League with finding places to play.
