SALISBURY, Md. - Wicomico County has changed the rules for purchasing permits to use its landfill and public trash collection sites, updating a policy that officials said had previously shortchanged residents.
The county announced in a news release on Tuesday that its annual $60 household garbage disposal permits are now good for one year from the date they were purchased. The change was recently approved by the county council and has already gone into effect.
The permits were previously issued to match the county's budget year, which begins each year on July 1 and concludes at the end of the following June. County law did not allow for the cost of the documents to be prorated until the change went into effect.
“The old system just wasn’t fair for many residents who purchased their permits throughout the year, said Wicomico County Executive Bob Culver. “This new system makes it fair for everyone, and will spread out the permits throughout the year, making it far more manageable for the employees in the Division of Solid Waste.”
After purchasing a permit, residents can dispose of garbage at the county landfill or one of its 11 convenience centers. The release also said the county is trying to let customers purchase permits with credit cards by the end of the year.
