Delaware's love for farmers markets is on the rise, and the latest sales report proves it.

According to Kathy Jackson, a marketing specialist at the Delaware Department of Agriculture, the state's 17 farmers markets achieved a significant milestone in 2023 by exceeding $4 million in sales for the first time.

"That marks a substantial increase from the totals in 2022," reported Jackson.

The Historic Lewes Farmers Market, hosting the state's largest producer-only market, plays a prominent role in this success.

Eleanor Shue, the Executive Director, believes people are recognizing the true value of the products.

"As prices rise in grocery stores, the market offers fresh, beautiful, and local produce at a comparable cost," she explained. "It's a worthwhile investment compared to the half-wilted items in grocery stores."

Beyond fresh produce, cut flowers are gaining popularity, according to Jackson.

Shue emphasizes that the sense of connection is a significant draw for customers.

"It is a community gathering place as much as a place to shop," Shue said.

Delaware's farmers market season kicks off in May, with high hopes for another record-breaking year in sales.
