WICOMICO COUNTY, Md. -- Salisbury University would like to bring a performing arts center to Wicomico County. The project would be part of a deal between the university and county to move the Wicomico County Library in downtown Salisbury.

If the library relocates, it would free up the site where the library currently stands. Officials from SU and the county told us on Wednesday a state-of-the-art facility, surrounded by the city, would be a win for both sides.

Eli Modlin, Chief of Staff at SU said it has been a longtime goal to bring a performing arts center to Wicomico County. So far, it has not worked out.

The deal between SU and the county, however, could breathe new life into that dream.

"That's why this partnership is so exciting," said Modlin. "This does give us the opportunity to put that performing arts center in the heart of downtown."

The new center would feature classroom and performance spaces for Salisbury students, and would provide roughly 1,000 seats for viewers.

It would also allow the university to bring shows, usually performed on campus, into a whole new spotlight.

"We have people coming from all across the world to Salisbury University to see some of the acts and world-class performers that we have," said Modlin. "We are excited to continue that and expand that."

Amanda Kerengo, who's lived in Salisbury for 15 years, said this would be a great opportunity for the Eastern Shore.

"It'll be a good way to showcase the talent that is local and keep it local," said Kerengo.

John Cannon, President of the Wicomico County Council, said this large of an investment doesn't come around very often.

"You try and figure it out yourself everyday as far as what we do everyday and try to enhance economic development and create an atmosphere of where there is lot of opportunities in Wicomico County," said Cannon. "Then someone drops a $100 million investment in the middle of the City of Salisbury."

The library may not move until 2026 and the performing arts center still needs council approval. Cannon said he believes this is a project they will want to move forward with.
