DELAWARE- Despite the rainy forecast, a flurry of Thanksgiving travelers hit the roads bright and early Tuesday morning.
At the Smyrna Rest Area, out-of-state license plates were a common sight. One driver hailing all the way from Ontario, Canada, en route to North Carolina.
"I left just after 4 this morning, hopefully get in after supper," shared Tim Chisholm, finding refuge in the rain as a preferable alternative to the heavy snowfall expected up north. "Lots and lots of snow plows already up north, I'll tell ya."
Denise and Keith Woodman, accompanied by their dog Jack, were on a marathon 13-hour journey from New Hampshire. The said their drive eased as they headed south.
"A lot of traffic, heavy traffic. I didn't think we were going to make it through Connecticut, it was slow-go through there" explained Denise.
Meanwhile, Frank Cancellieri was navigating the entire peninsula from Chincoteague to New Jersey.
"I am going to do the total trip because my wife doesn't like driving in the rain," he noted.
Amidst their travels, every driver emphasized the importance of caution on the roads.
"There are always people on the road that give you a hard time, you know, cut you off, speed up, and especially going 70 MPH around curves in the rain. That's kind of stupid and reckless, so that's annoying, but I mean, we got here safe so far," mentioned Zach who came from Pennsylvania on his way to Bethany Beach.
AAA anticipates approximately 55 million Americans will travel for Thanksgiving, suggesting that traveling before 11 a.m. is the optimal time.
