MILLSBORO, DE - Multiple fire units responded to a brush fire in Sussex County on Saturday.

The Indian River Volunteer Fire Company responded to a home on Wilson Myrtle Lane off Layton Davis Road in Millsboro at approximately 12:30pm, for a brush fire. Fire officials were told the incident occurred as a result of a burn barrel not being watched.

Emergency crew assignments included fire suppression to stop the flames from spreading to other structures.

According to IRVFC, the occupants were using a burn barrel that had allowed ashes and embers to escape. This ignited grass and brush, that was then fanned by the high winds. The fire spread to several nearby items, including fallen trees, tires, a storage shed, and vegetation of a nearby yard and field.

Emergency units cleared the scene after suppression efforts were completed.
