Holiday Spirit Brings Business to Downtown Cambridge

CAMBRIDGE, Md.- Dorchester County businesses are preparing for a busy but safe Labor Day Weekend. Downtown Cambridge in particular is gearing up for a special event to make up for some lost business due to the COVID-19 pandemic. They are a calling it "The Labor Day Sidewalk Sale."

At least 11 downtown area shops like Maiden Maryland are participating, hoping to draw people to boost sales.

"It's exciting. People are out. People are shopping," Maiden Maryland owner Tammy Lyndee said. "So if we could just incorporate people downtown as part this their weekend, it's going to be a great place to be."

Lyndee says sales have hurt this year. She's relying on Labor Day to help.

Meanwhile, Charles Kilmon of the Heart of Dorchester Antiques Shop says the cost to get in will be masks and social distancing. Like Lyndee, he says business since the pandemic began has slowed.

"It has slowed down about 40 percent," Kilmon said. "We hope everybody comes and enjoys themselves and finds great bargains."

Phase III of Maryland's Reopening Plan starting this Friday means more customers can shop inside too.

The Labor Day Sidewalk Sale officially starts Friday and ends Monday in downtown Cambridge.

Businesses like Lyndee's and Kilmon's are offering some big discounts on merchandise.

There will also be live music, a raffle and some giveaways.
