CANARY CREEK BRIDGE

LEWES, Del.-The start date of a project to replace the Canary Creek Bridge on New Road in Lewes has been postponed.

The project was scheduled to begin in the Fall 2023. That date has now been pushed back to the end of 2026. Delaware Department of Transportation tells WBOC that it is required to build a new wetland site equal to the area that is being impacted by the bridge project.

"Finding a viable property to do that with an owner willing to sell it to us has taken significantly longer than originally estimated,"said Delaware Department of Transportation Community Relations Director "CR" McLeod. "As a result the actual construction cannot move forward until the wetland mitigation piece is completed. Once we have that worked out we’ll have another public information meeting about the project later this year".
