EASTON, MD - Currently, anyone who rides a skateboard, scooter, or bicycle in Easton is not allowed to ride on the sidewalks. The town is considering a change that ordinance.
Up for discussion is allowing anyone under the age of 13 to ride their skateboard or scooter along the sidewalks. Frank Gunsallus, the council president, says with upcoming projects like the new pump track and skate park, the change in the ordinance makes sense.
"We thought it would be good to have the people who are going to be utilizing that facility to use that preferred method of transportation." Gunsallus added, "Instead of walking or carrying their device they can actually ride all the way there without having it confiscated or getting a ticket."
Gunsallus went on to say that one of the councilmembers raised a concern about the safety of senior citizens on the sidewalks and another on what should be done about allowing the skateboards and scooters in the historic district part of town. He says they'll be looking into ways to prevent any accidents.
Now, allowing bicycles into the mix is where Gunsallus says gets a little tricky. Monday's discussion was tabled for Dec. 4 when the council could re-write the ordinance.
