Delaware Bay Barge Fire Finally Extinguished
- Updated
Kent County, De. - Officials from the Bowers Fire Company and Coast Guard tell WBOC the fire on the barge in the Delaware Bay is finally out. Calls for the fire came in around 1 am on Monday morning and those flames were not extinguished until Tuesday afternoon.
Incident commanders said at 4 pm on Tuesday afternoon their latest readings showed the scrap metal on the barge was still smoldering, but there was no longer an actively burning fire. Coast Guard officials say they are still unsure how the fire started, but there were still no reports of injuries as a result of the fire.
DNREC said late Monday that the organization was monitoring the situation with the barge fire and there was no evidence of pollution into the water or negative impacts to wildlife.
Firefighters from numerous Delaware fire departments, along with crews from Maryland, New Jersey, and the New York Fire Department all took part in the effort to put out the fire. The Coast Guard said the barge was carrying scarp metal of house hold appliances. Fire fighters said the barge was about 400x100 feet and the scrap metal pile on the barge was about 40 feet high.
Delaware Governor John Carney had enacted a State of Emergency in Kent County Tuesday afternoon to provide additional resources to help put the fire out.
