DELAWARE - DelDOT is reminding Delaware drivers to be prepared for increased traffic statewide this weekend.
So far this year, there have been 57 fatalities on Delaware roads, which is a 27% increase from last year at this time. During Fourth of July weekend last year, officials say there were 215 reported crashes that resulted in 59 injuries and two fatalities.
To minimize impaired driving during the holiday, the Office of Highway Safety will be offering $20 vouchers for Lyft and Uber. Officials say those vouchers will be available from 12 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 4 at MySoberRides.com. Those vouchers can be used between 12 p.m. on July 4 and 3 a.m. on July 5.
Numerous fireworks displays and other celebrations will take place around the state this weekend. DelDOT advises drivers to be prepared for delays when traveling in and out of these events. They also ask drivers to practice responsible driving and not worsen road conditions. For example, drivers should take care not to "Block the Box" by not waiting for intersections to clear, especially on Route 1 between Lewes and Dewey Beach, which officials say causes additional delays.
Alternatively, DelDOT encourages travelers to consider using DART's Beach Bus to get to Delaware's beach communities. The bus service offers free parking. Officials say it will also be the easiest way to travel to and from Rehoboth Beach's fireworks show on July 5.
