Delmar Community Members Following Wilkerson Trial

DELMAR, Del. -- Support for Delmar Police Cpl. Keith Heacook and his family continued on Monday as Randon Wilkerson, the man accused of killing Heacook in 2021, was found guilty on all charges.

"We're through this part", says Delmar Police Chief Ivan Barkley. "The verdict has been rendered. We're awaiting sentencing, and we move forward."

Barkley and others from the Delmar community traveled to Georgetown Monday for the trial. Barkley says the quick outcome brings a sense of closure to the town.

"I think that at least we have some closure," says Barkley. "The defendant, he'll get the opportunity to live out his days, even if it's in a cell. Corporal Heacook, he didn't get that advantage. His life was cut short."

Others in the community were not able to attend the trial, but still hold Cpl. Heacook and his family close to their hearts. Longtime friend of Heacook, Roger Martinson, says he's happy to finally see Heacook get justice.

"You become desensitized after a period of time when things haven't been done," says Martinson. "To hear the verdict finally being handed down has been a good feeling. It's about time."

Wilkerson's sentencing is set for Dec. 8.
